D-dimer is a degradation product of crosslinked fibrin (XL-FDP) by plasmin, the main clot lysis enzyme.
These are small fragments of cross-linked fibrin circulating in the blood, markers of fibrinolysis.
Measuring the level of D-dimer in a patient is helpful in indicating the presence of a blood clot.
Therefore, levels below predetermined thresholds can be used to rule out conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), and stroke.
A D-dimer level can be used to help diagnose disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) and to monitor the effectiveness of DIC treatment.
D-dimers increase with age and are elevated during pregnancy.
