ELISA test used for determination of total (complexed and free) FXIII-B subunit in human plasma.
Plasma FXIII is a heterotetramer (FXIII A2B2) consisting of two potentially active A Subunits (FXIII-A) and two carrier/inhibitory B Subunits (FXIII-B).
About 50 % of the B subunits exist in free form while all A Subunits are complexed with B subunits in plasma. FXIII-B has a protective role and prevents FXIII-A from a slow progressive activation and from elimination from plasma. For this reason, FXIII-A is also significantly decreased in FXIII-B deficiency which causes a moderate bleeding tendency. FXIII-B deficiency is a rare disease and can either be inherited or mediated by autoantibodies.
